I never believed I could wear a wig or a hair topper and feel good about it. My biggest worry was that people could find out I was wearing fake hair. I couldn’t deal with the fact that someone could laugh at me for wearing a hairpiece… Disclaimer: It never happen and, none even ever noticed my hair toppers or my wigs!!!

So… What to choose…Wig or Topper?

Understanding the difference between wigs and toppers is important when considering which option is right for you. Wigs cover the entire head, while toppers are designed to be placed on specific areas of the head where hair loss is occurring. There are also different types of wigs and toppers, including synthetic and human hair options, as well as different attachment methods and base construction. On a personal note, I started with a hair topper as I thought that it would have been less “invasive” and easier to manage…but it took me a few months to then fall in love with wigs. (They are so easy to pop on and go!).

When choosing a wig or topper, it’s important to consider factors such as the desired style, color, and length, as well as the level of maintenance required. Proper care and maintenance are essential for ensuring the longevity and quality of your wig or topper. With the right care, wigs and toppers can provide a natural-looking solution for those experiencing hair loss or those who simply want to switch up their hairstyle.

Differences Between Wigs and Toppers

Hairpieces such as wigs and toppers can enhance the appearance of natural hair. However, there are significant differences between the two. Wigs are full head coverings that replace natural hair, whereas toppers are smaller hairpieces that attach to the top of the head, covering areas where hair is thin or balding.

Both wigs and toppers are made of either synthetic or human hair and can be styled in different ways.

Toppers blend in with natural hair as they only cover the top of the head and come in various sizes and styles to suit different stages of hair loss and individual needs.

Benefits of Wigs

Wearing wigs can be highly advantageous for individuals experiencing hair loss or thinning hair. They offer a quick and easy way to completely transform your appearance and can be styled in various ways to suit your style. Additionally, wigs can serve as a protective measure for natural hair, shielding it from damage caused by chemical treatments and heat styling.

Furthermore, they can be used as a trendy fashion accessory! There’s no need to worry about matching your natural hair color since they cover the entire head. While wigs may feel heavier and hotter than toppers in the summer, there are lightweight options available. I’m currently working on an in-depth article about different wig caps, which will provide more details on the subject.

Benefits of Toppers

If you’re experiencing hair thinning or moderate balding in certain areas of your head, using toppers can be a great solution. These hairpieces are designed to blend in with your natural hair, giving you a seamless and natural-looking result.

They can also add volume, length, and thickness to thinning hair without any invasive procedures.

Compared to wigs, toppers are lighter and less overwhelming for first-timers in the alternative hair world. Ultimately, whether you choose to use a wig or a topper depends on your individual needs, comfort level, and personal preferences.

Types of Hair

Human Hair Wigs

Human hair wigs are made from real human hair and are considered the most natural-looking option. They are soft and silky and can be styled just like natural hair. They are also more durable than synthetic wigs, lasting up to a year or more with proper care.

There are two types of human hair wigs: Remy and non-Remy. Remy hair wigs are made from hair that has been cut from a donor’s head and kept in the same direction to maintain the hair’s cuticle intact as well as natural texture and shine. Non-Remy hair wigs are made from hair that has been collected from various sources and may not have the same quality as Remy hair wigs. (Great for beginners and if you have a tight budget).

High End human hair wigs can be expensive, with prices ranging from a few hundred to several thousand dollars depending on the quality and length of the hair. They require more maintenance than synthetic wigs, including regular washing, conditioning, and styling.

Synthetic Hair Wigs

Synthetic hair wigs are made from synthetic fibers and are a more affordable option than human hair wigs.

They come in a wide range of colors and styles, and many are pre-styled, making them low maintenance.

However, synthetic wigs can be less durable. They can also be more prone to tangling and heat damage, so they require more caution when styling with heat tools. Only heat-resistant synthetic fibers can be styled with heat tools but always at a low temperature.

Synthetic wigs are a good option for those who want to experiment with different styles and colors without committing to a permanent change. They are also a good option for those on a budget.

Prices range from around $50 to a few hundred dollars. Yes, there are synthetic wigs out there that are affordable and look like real hair! (New blog post coming soon!!)Overall, the choice between human hair and synthetic hair wigs depends on personal preference, budget, and the level of maintenance desired.

"Crown toppers," from partial to full coverage.

Types of Toppers

Partial Coverage Toppers

If you’re experiencing hair loss or thinning in a specific area of your head, a partial coverage topper might be a great solution for you.

These toppers are designed to cover the most prominent areas of hair loss, such as the crown, and can also add volume and texture to your existing hair. When choosing a partial coverage topper, it’s important to consider the size and shape that will work best for you.

Some popular styles include small toppers for thinning crowns, which blend seamlessly with your natural hair and offer coverage ranging from 2-4 inches, and larger base toppers for the crown area that cover the entire crown and work well for those with thinning hair on the parting area.

Crown Hair Toppers

If you’re experiencing light to moderate hair loss due to medical conditions or alopecia, Crown Hair Toppers provide a great hair replacement solution.

They are designed to cover the thinning on the top of the head and come in various styles, lengths, base sizes, and colors.

Crown Hair Toppers are made of synthetic or human hair, carefully crafted to match the natural hair texture and color.

There are different cap styles to choose from, in both, wigs and toppers, including Monofilament Toppers, Lace Front Toppers, Integration Toppers, and Silk Top Hair Toppers.

Monofilament Toppers are perfect for those with sensitive scalps or who want a lighter and more comfortable fit, while Lace Front Toppers provide a natural-looking hairline and are great for those who want to wear their hair up or back.

Integration Toppers blend with natural hair, creating a seamless look, and are perfect for those who want to add volume and thickness to their existing hair. Silk Top Hair Toppers offer an undetectable look, looking like hair is growing from your scalp thanks to the three layers of material that construct the base.

Toppers are an excellent solution if you feel overwhelmed at the idea of wearing a full wig and want to cover moderate hair loss or add volume and thickness. With the right style and fit, they can look natural and beautiful, boosting your confidence and self-esteem.

Choosing the Right Wig or Topper

Consider Your Hair Type

When choosing a topper, it’s important to consider your hair type. If you have curly hair, you may want to choose a wig or topper that has a similar curl pattern to your natural hair. If you have straight hair, you may want to choose a topper that is also straight. Additionally, if your hair is thin or fine, you may want to choose a hair topper that has a lighter density to avoid looking too bulky or heavy.

Regarding wigs, the above does not apply, as your hair will be completely covered and you can have fun and switch looks as you wish! (This is a real plus regarding wearing wigs!).

Consider Your Lifestyle

When deciding between a wig or a topper, it’s important to take your lifestyle into account. If you’re an active person who enjoys exercising or swimming, a synthetic hair wig or topper may be a better option. It’s easier to care for and less expensive than human hair, which you don’t want to damage by swimming in it.

Alternatively, if you have a more sedentary lifestyle, a human hair wig or topper may be more suitable since you won’t be exposing it to intense physical activity.

Consider Your Budget

When buying wigs or hair toppers, it’s essential to consider your budget as they can vary significantly in price. Synthetic options are cheaper and require less maintenance, while those made of human hair offer a more natural look and feel but they are more expensive. You can style and treat human hair wigs or toppers like your natural hair but you are limited when it comes to synthetic options.

It’s important to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each option before deciding. Choosing the right wig or topper shouldn’t be stressful. By considering your hair type, lifestyle, and budget, you can make an informed decision that will leave you feeling confident and beautiful.

Caring for Your Wig or Topper

Cleaning and Maintenance

Proper cleaning and maintenance are essential for keeping your wig or topper looking beautiful and lasting longer. Here are some tips to help you care for your wig or topper when you will decide what to purchase:

  • Use a wig brush or a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle your wig or topper before washing.
  • Fill a sink or basin with cool water and add a small amount of wig shampoo. Immerse your wig or topper in the water and gently swirl it around. Rinse thoroughly with cool water. (For synthetic hair apply the same procedure but wash with a shampoo made for synthetic fibers!).
  • Gently blot your wig or topper with a towel to remove excess water. Do not twist or wring it.
  • Place your wig or topper on a wig stand or mannequin head to air dry. Avoid using a hair dryer or other heat source to dry it as much as you can. If your hairpiece is made of synthetic fibers, never apply heat to it. (Unless it is a heat-defiant kind of fiber).

In addition to regular cleaning, there are a few other things you can do to maintain your wig or hair topper:

  • With human hair, use a conditioner after washing to help keep the hair soft and manageable.
  • Avoid exposing your wig or topper to heat sources, such as ovens, stoves, and fireplaces.
  • Try to protect your wig or topper from the sun and harsh weather conditions. It will extend the life of the hair, both synthetic and human strands.

Storage Tips

Proper storage is also important for preserving the life of your wig or topper. Here are some tips for storing your wig or topper:

  • Place it on a wig stand or mannequin head to help maintain its shape when not in use.
  • Keep your wig or topper in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Cover your wig or topper with a scarf or hair net to prevent dust and dirt from accumulating on when you are not using it.
  • If you are traveling with your wig or topper, place it in a protective case or box to prevent it from getting crushed or damaged while traveling.

By following these simple tips, you can help ensure that your wig or topper, whatever real or synthetic hair, stays looking beautiful and lasts for a long time.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Whatever you will choose, remember that life is made of trial and error. You will eventually find what suits you better. Just don’t be scared and allow yourself to wear a wig, a topper, both, or nothing! This is totally up to you… whatever you will choose, be proud of yourself and don’t forget how beautiful you are!
