Human Hair Toppers - How To Choose Your Perfect Color

What You Need to Consider Before Choosing Your Human Hair Topper

Choosing the Right Topper: A Simple and Quick Guide

Are you on the hunt for the perfect hair topper but feeling a bit overwhelmed? Let me walk you through my personal experience of how I chose the right human hair toppers for myself. Hopefully, my journey can shed some light on how to make the best choice for your own topper selection.

First, it’s important to remember that not all human hair toppers are created equal. There are many different styles available so be sure to take the time to explore each option and choose the one that best suits your needs. Some of the more popular choices include silk top hair toppers and silk top hair toppers

I love the realistic scalp of a silk hair topper but I also really love a lightweight lace topper during the summer months. (Check out our guides, they will give you the info you need in order to choose what is best for you… or convince you to get both options and switch them around!).

Base Size Matters!

When choosing the size of my human hair topper, I prefer a slightly larger base for added comfort and a secure fit.

To determine where to clip the base, I use a soft measuring tape to measure the area from front to back and from side to side that needs to be covered due to hair loss, thinning hair, or bald spots. This helps me select a comfortable spot on my head for clipping and ensures a smooth and flat fit.

If what you need is simply to add volume to your fine hair, smaller base sizes like 5 inches by 5 inches (12.7 cm x 12.7 cm), or 6 inches by 6 inches (15.24cm X 15.24cm) are an ideal option.

If you’re experiencing a progressive stage of hair loss where thinning is becoming noticeable, consider medium-based size hair toppers like 7 inches by 7 inches or 8 inches by 8 inches. (18cm x 18cm / 20cm x20cm)

When it comes to advanced hair loss with a large thinning area, or you find yourself needing to cover balding on your crown area,  I encourage you to choose a larger base size of a minimum of 8 inches by 8 inches and up. (The larger base I have seen for a topper is 10 inches x 10 inches – after that, you may want to consider wearing a full wig!). (10 inches = 25.4 cm).

Length Matters Too!

When I need to choose the length of my human hair topper, I measure from the center part (from the back of my head) down to the ends of my hair using the same soft measuring tape.

Crown Hair toppers

My hair measures around 19 inches (48cm)  and all my toppers have always been 21″ to 24 inches (53cm to 60cm). I always recommend going a couple of inches longer than your actual hair length as this will compensate for the natural curve of your head and will ensure the topper hair isn’t too short. Plus, down the line, you will need to trim the ends of your topper and you will be happy about those extra couple of inches!

Here We Go: Finding the Right Color. My Tips for you

Tip 1: Clear Imagery is Key

The first step to masterful color selection involves capturing your existing hair’s essence through high-quality images. Seek out natural light, ideally beside a well-lit window.

Avoid direct sunlight, as it can be deceiving!  Consider asking a friend’s assistance in capturing frontal, lateral, posterior, and top shots of your hair.

This comprehensive visual insight will help your chosen retailer understand your natural color hues and whether specific root shades will be necessary on your human hair topper.

Tip 2: Infuse Inspiration into Your Quest

Get inspired! Check out platforms like Pinterest, Instagram, or even Google for hair images that match your desired look. However, please take note: that the process of coloring wigs and toppers differs from that of natural hair.

Toppers are colored before being affixed to their caps. As such, intricate salon coloring techniques (like balayage) may yield contrasting outcomes.

Bearing this distinction in mind, feel free to present these inspirations to your retailer, who can then craft a shade that resonates while considering the coloring process intricacies.

Tip 3: Embrace Color Swatches

Color swatches hold the power to demystify color selection. You can either purchase swatches directly from the retailer or request them. These tangible samples offer an exact visual and tactile representation of the colors available. It’s a straightforward way to perceive potential matches and undertake informed decisions. However, note that lighting conditions can still influence perceptions, so try to examine swatches under different lighting scenarios.

Tip 4: Leverage Pre-Existing Combinations

Retailers often offer a range of pre-existing color options that they’ve already expertly showcased online (either on their website or YouTube!).

Dive into their catalog and selecting a shade that’s close to your ideal hair color can be effective.

Plus, you can personalize these choices by requesting subtle modifications – maybe you wish to add a few more lowlights to your piece or add a slightly darker root.

This, while steering away from absolute customization, can bring you great results and it will indeed simplify the decision-making process.

Tip 5: The Magic of Hair Samples

For the most accurate color match, you may want to consider sending a hair sample to the retailer. Many hair brands provide this service. It’s important to clip a small piece of hair that reflects your current color accurately. Please avoid sending drain or brushed hair, as they may not match the hair on your head.

This reference will give you the most perfect match that images alone can’t always provide. However, keep in mind that natural hair can vary in color due to exposure to sunlight and styling products.

Do Not Stress Too Much About Your Human Hair Topper Color – Just Pay Attention To The Roots!

Even if the color isn’t an exact match, don’t stress too much! Hair toppers cover most of your hair, and our expert styling team wants to reassure you that a few shades lighter or darker will still blend beautifully with your bio hair! The only tip we suggest you to follow is to match your natural hair roots with your topper this will ensure a 100% perfect blend that will look natural and beautiful.

Remember, the key is to feel comfortable and confident with your human hair topper choice. Measure your base size and length accurately, and don’t hesitate to send clear photos to your chosen retailer for advice. With a touch of customization, you’ll soon have a topper that matches your natural hair and enhances your look effortlessly.

I hope my experience helps you in your own topper journey. Happy hair hunting!

Expert Tip About Colors #number When Choosing Your Human Hair Topper

You probably saw many retailers addressing hair colors with numbers… #1B #2 #4 #10 and so on… What is this?

To simplify the process, we asked one of our experts to break it down for you! This is how  “colors families” are divided:

These are distinct groups, making it easier for you to choose the shade that’s closest to your bio hair color.

Hair toppers

Black Colors (Shades 1 to 1B)

Shades 1 to 1B belong to the black color family. These colors encompass a spectrum of black tones, ranging from deep ebony to softer black-brown hues.

If your natural hair falls within this color range, selecting a topper from this family will ensure a seamless blend.

50 SHADES OF BROWN TOPPERS

Brown to Light Brown Colors (Usually from Shade 2 to 12)

For those with brown hair,  shades 2 to 12, span various brown tones. From light chestnut to rich chocolate, this color family provides options for brunettes seeking a natural and harmonious look.

Human Hair shades of blonde hairpieces

Blonde to Platinum Colors (Usually from Shade 14 to 26)

If you are part of team blondes you will find your perfect match within shades 14 to 26. This color range encompasses an array of blonde shades, from warm honey to a cool platinum blonde. Whether you’re aiming for a sun-kissed glow or a striking hot platinum blonde, this color family is where you should look at!

Human Hair Toppers - how to choose your colour

Natural Red Colors (Usually from Shade 27 to 33)

If you’re blessed with natural red hair, shades from number 27 to 33 offer the red tones of natural red hair. From fiery copper to deep auburn, you should look into this range of shades if your hair belongs to this family of colors.

Knowing the color family of your natural hair can assist you in selecting a hair topper that enhances your current appearance, but please, note: it’s important to keep in mind that each retailer has their own color shade options, so the information above is only a general understanding of globally recognized hair color divisions.
