How to Make Your Human Hair Topper Less “Wiggy!”

Tips and Techniques

In this article, we are getting into a topic that resonates with many: how to transform your human hair topper from appearing “wiggy” to looking as natural as it can get. We all desire hair toppers that blend effortlessly with our locks, ensuring an undetectable and confident look. However, not all hair toppers are created equal in this aspect. Factors such as lace quality, density, and price play a role in determining how natural the result will be.

Let’s uncover some key steps to achieve that natural appearance you are looking for with your human hair topper.

How to make your hair topper look natural

How to Make Your Hair Topper Look Natural

The illusion of a natural hair topper depends on several factors: lace, silk, or monofilament top quality, hair density and hair quality. These elements are all equally important to determine whether your hair topper will effortlessly mimic your own hair and look like it is growing from your scalp. Let’s check out together a  series of steps that will guide you toward the path of making your hair topper a  natural-looking one!

1. Opt for Low to Medium-Density Human Hair Topper

For a remarkably natural appearance, consider selecting a low to medium-density topper. These toppers feature a hair density of around 110% low density) and 120% to 125% (medium density), giving them a very natural appearance. If you find a low-density human hair topper inadequate in coverage, you can opt for a larger base topper (like an 8″*8″ – 20*20 cm) while keeping a density of approximately 120%. This ensures both coverage and a natural look and feel.

The market standard for most human hair toppers is medium-density, which I do personally recommend, as it provides a natural look while still offering volume but not unnaturally full.

If you are looking for a thicker, fuller appearance, of course, opt for a high-density topper and if you feel it is too much hair, it can always be thinned with no problems!

Low-density human hair toppers are a great option, especially if you are just getting started. They will feel more natural, less voluminous and less overwhelming. Nevertheless, the density that best suits you is based on your personal preference and styling needs. If your dream is to have lots of volume, go for it!

FAQ ABOUT HUMAN HAIR TOPPERS DENSITY

Q: What is the difference between low to medium-density and high-density hair toppers?

A: Low to medium-density human hair toppers offer less amount of hair compared to high-density ones. A lower density, in our opinion, provides a more natural and less voluminous look. High-density hair toppers can offer up to twice the amount of hair as a standard topper and are great if you are after a thicker, fuller look.

Q: Is medium-density the best option for human hair toppers?

A: A low to medium-density is recommended especially if you are new to wearing a human hair topper. The results will be natural and it will be easier for you to get used to hairpice.

2. If You Purchased A Lace Topper: Bleach the Knots for a Realistic Scalp!

In just 15 minutes, you can transform the look of your lace topper by bleaching its knots. This process will give you amazing results.  This technique enhances the natural appeal of your hair topper and contributes to an authentic scalp appearance. Bleaching the knots will make them less visible. Please do this only if you feel confident about it, otherwise, ask an expert to assist you!

To bleach your knot, you will need a few supplies:

  1. A bowl
  2. peroxide cream developer (20 or 40 volume),
  3. A tint brush,
  4. latex gloves
  5. An old towel

Begin by mixing the developer and peroxide cream in a 1 to 2 ratio in the bowl.

Soak your brush in the mixture and begin applying it to the knots (in the inside cap of your hair topper!).

Make sure to spread the cream evenly and avoid leaving any clumps. Your cream should be thick and not liquid. You do not want any bleaching cream to pass through your lace and spread to the hair on the top part of your topper!

Once you have fully saturated the knots, let them sit for about 5 to 8 minutes. Keep an eye on them so that they don’t overdevelop. When it is time, rinse off the bleach with cold water and dry the hairpiece with a towel.

Your knots are now less visible, giving your lace topper a more natural look!

3. Change The Part Line And Pluck Some Hair

If you find that your new human hair topper has a straight, unnatural parting, there’s a quick fix to make it look more natural. Simply create an uneven parting that isn’t perfectly straight. This simple trick can make a big difference in just a few seconds!

To change the parting on your human hair topper, start by spraying a little water on the part. Then, use a toothcomb to redesign the part and make it look more uneven.

Finally, blow dry and style the topper to set the new part in place. If you have a mannequin head, it can be helpful to use it during this process so that you can work freely and get the best results.

A mannequin head is always best rather than styling your topper while on your head. The risk is to pull your bio hair and cause unwanted damage.

Another tip to make your hair topper look natural is to gently pluck some hairs from the parting area, creating a lighter, more natural appearance. However, please exercise caution! Go slow with the plucking!  Over-plucking can lead you to a very bad outcome.  Balance is key: pluck strand by strand and make sure not to pluck too much around the same area!

4. Concealer For a Seamless Part (Lace Topper and Monofilament)

If your human hair topper is not a silk top, the art of concealing can be really handy! This involves applying a bit of concealer to the parting area. This will lighten the part, covering the knots and will make your topper look more natural! Dabbing some concealer into the part line makes it blend seamlessly with your natural scalp. This minor touch works like magic! (Do not overdo it with the concealer, a little goes a long way!) Please note: You will have to repeat this process every time you wash your hair topper.

5. Embrace Styling Your Human Hair Topper

Fear not the styling phase. Human Hair toppers are highly customizable, allowing you to tailor them to your desired look. You can add face-framing layers, bangs, curls and whatever else you wish!  Human hair toppers make it easy for you to add in your own personal touch. With human hair, you can heat style with hot tools, like curling or flat irons and even use styling products! Tip: Always apply a heat protectant first and if you wish to cut your hairpice, do not experiment if you are not experienced, consult a hairstylist!.

6. Using Scar Tape on the inside of your Hair Topper Cap

To make your hair topper’s parting appear more realistic a trick that I love is to use scar tape. This method indeed improves the natural look of the parting of your hair topper, (lace topper or monofilament) making it blend seamlessly with your scalp. After removing the protective layers from the scar tape, apply it over the monofilament or lace section of your topper (on the inside of the cap). This technique transforms the parting and makes it look like the hair is growing from a real scalp!

7.  Wear Your Hair Topper and create a natural hairline

Think outside the box when it comes to wearing your hair topper.

Instead of placing it directly on top of your head, try shifting it slightly to the side and 1cm behind your hairline. This will enhance the natural appearance and blend in with your hairline.

To create a natural blend, pull some front strands of your bio hair forward. Align the topper’s part with your own, and attach it with clips or combs, making sure not to pull your hair too tight. Your bio hair (even if very little) will help to create a totally natural hairline and disguise the rim where the topper starts.(If you opt for a lace front, you will not need to follow this step!)

If you have sparse areas, you can use hair powder or fibers to fill them in and create a seamless hairline blend. Lastly, gently brush your natural hair and topper together to blend.
