HAIR CROWN TOPPERS: MISTAKES TO AVOID

Our Experts Tips

As someone who lives with Trichotillomania, hairpieces like hair crown toppers have been my savior for many years. They make me feel elegant and confident each time I wear them!

While crown hair toppers provide incredible benefits, it’s important to navigate potential pitfalls to ensure a seamless and natural integration.

Having made many mistakes in the past and worked with countless clients, I have compiled a list of the top 16 mistakes you should (and can) avoid when it comes to hair crown toppers. Let’s dig in!

Ordering your first hair crown topper can be an exciting (yes, yes, also nerve-wracking!) experience. We all want a solution to make us feel better about ourselves and stop worrying about thinning hair, bald spots, and hair loss.

Mistake 1: Shortening Your Forehead

Positioning the hair topper too close to your natural hairline can disrupt your facial proportions. Aim for a subtle transition by placing your hair crown topper the crown slightly behind your natural hairline.

a) Position the topper close to your natural hairline, allowing just about a centimeter of space. Pull out the hair at your hairline, they will serve to hide the transition between your hairline and the hair topper. This placement will create a seamless transition between your hair and the topper.

b) Clip the hair crown topper into place, beginning with the front comb (if you have one on your hairpiece) then the back clips and then the side ones. After securing the back clips, revisit the front to ensure everything is in place, as slight movements during the process can affect their positioning.

c) Use a brush or wide-tooth comb to blend your own hair with the topper’s hair. This step will give you a smooth and natural transition between your hair and the topper.

Mistake 2: Placing It Too Far Back

Avoid placing the hairpiece too far back on your head, which can create an obvious contrast between your natural hair and the crown piece. It is all about balance!!  Positioning it slightly back will help maintain the appearance of a natural hairline.

Mistake 3: Incorrect Clip Placement

Improperly attaching the hair piece without securing enough of your natural hair in the clip can result in discomfort and instability. Ensure a secure fit by opening the clip, scooping up an appropriate amount of hair, and then fastening them securely. (Don’t be too harsh, the clips should never end up hurting you!).

Mistake 4: Neglecting Base Stretching

Failing to stretch the base of the hair crown topper before attaching it can lead to an unnatural fit. Stretching the base allows it to mold to your scalp’s shape, ensuring a flat, smooth and natural look.

Mistake 5: Ignoring Hair Texture

Mismatching the texture of the crown hair piece with your natural hair can make the integration noticeable. Choose a texture that complements your hair for a more natural blend.

Mistake 6: Skipping Maintenance

Don’t be lazy! Neglecting proper care routines can lead to tangling, matting, and, of course, a less natural appearance. Regular maintenance is crucial to keeping your crown topper looking its best. Every time you take your topper off, please brush it and store it on a mannequin head or in a box. I apply 3 drops of jojoba oil twice a week on the length of my hair crown topper, it helps keep it hydrated. (Tiny drops, do not overdo or it will be an oily mess!)

Mistake 7: Not Considering Haircut and Styling

Failing to align the haircut and styling of your natural hair with the crown hair piece can result in an obvious and not-so-sexy contrast. Visit your trusted hairstylist and give your hair crown topper a cut to match your bio hair! I promise you this will make a ton of difference and it will ensure your overall look is cohesive. Plus, it is so much fun to be able to choose a look you maybe could not achieve before with only your natural hair!

Mistake 8: Hair Crown Topper Base – Not measuring properly

When buying a hair piece, it’s important to measure the area where you want to place it beforehand. This will help determine the appropriate size of the base for your hair topper, which should cover the entire thinning area and fit comfortably and securely on your head. Note that the base size is not related to the size of your head, and only wigs require proper circumference sizing.

Mistake 9: Choosing the wrong density

When choosing your hair crown topper, it’s important to consider both the density and length. While higher density may seem like the best choice, it can actually result in an unnatural-looking finish, especially if you’re transitioning from thinning hair to a fuller look. It can be really overwhelming to carry a lion mane when the day before you did not have one! With thinning hair, a lower-density topper will appear more natural and it will feel lighter, especially if you’re new to wearing hair crown toppers. As for length, it’s important to never choose a hair topper that is shorter than your natural hair. In fact, I recommend purchasing a topper that is 1-2 inches longer to ensure a seamless blend with your bio hair.

Mistake 10: Fearing Wind and Water

It is okay to protect your crown hair piece but fearing wind and water entirely can limit your experiences. Get out and have fun! Your topper is secured and it will not fly away! My advice is to maybe opt for accessories like scarves or hairbands to secure the hair piece more during more extreme outdoor activities and embrace occasional exposure to sun & water.

Just one tip: Swim time isn’t the time to wear your favorite wig!

Buy a less expensive or even simply opt for a synthetic hair crown topper if you are planning to swim so you won’t be as financially and emotionally pis*ed off if something happens to your hairpiece!

Why? Well, chlorine and slaty water aren’t really besties with your bio hair to start with, so, why should it be different with hair toppers or wigs?

Chlorine is a harsh chemical that can damage skin and hair and salt, on the other hand, reduces moisture.

Mistake 11: Sleeping with hair crown toppers

Hair crown toppers are easy to attach and remove, but sleeping with them is not advisable. The friction will cause the hair to tangle and shred and you will shorten its life span considerably. You can sleep with it sometimes but avoid it as much as you can. Plus, those clips may end up pulling your natural hair and possibly ripping it. It is not only bad for your bio hair but the traction will hurt your scalp too!

I understand that it’s possible to find yourself in a romantic situation where your partner is unaware that you wear a hair topper. If you’re in this situation and can’t remove it, consider using a silk pillowcase and wearing a headband to minimize any potential damage.

Conclusion:

We hope that after these tips you’re well on your way to achieving that seamless and natural look you are dreaming of with your hair crown topper.
